Water Kefir Grains
Water Kefir grains, combined with sugar/water mixtures, make refreshing probiotic sodas. This is a great option for those who do not tolerate dairy. Sugar/water mixtures can include fruit juices, herbs, ginger and various sweeteners.
Milk Kefir Grains (Back-ordered, one month delay)
These grains look like small lumps of overcooked cauliflower. They culture milk to produce a sour, probiotic yoghurt-like product. They grow in cow or goat milk, raw or pasteurized, full or skim.
Caspian Sea Yoghurt
Caspian Sea Yoghurt, also known as, "Viili Yoghurt," is a traditional starter for a yoghurt that cultures at room temperature. It has a mild flavour and we love to eat it mixed with Milk Kefir. Compared to a laboratory produced powdered yoghurt, this culture contains a diverse range of microflora. It can be mixed with cow or goat milk.
Kombucha (SCOBY) (Back-ordered, one week delay)
The Kombucha "mushroom" or SCOBY (Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeasts) cultures sweet tea to make a refreshing sour/sweet probiotic soda.
Sourdough (Wild New Zealand yeast, started in March 2006 in Northland)
Make your own delicious, healthy sourdough bread, pancakes, crackers, etc. This starter is 100% wild (no commercial yeast was used to get it going). I started it here in the Far North in March 2006. This starter comes with recipes for bread, crackers, scones, pancakes and crumpets.
